About being ooman

We are a humble seed hoping to grow change in the world.

what does it mean to be ooman?

Rooted in the evolution of language, from the Jamaican Patois meaning “of woman” it transcends mere semantics. Indeed, the term “Ooman” carries profound symbolism. Ooman embraces the feminine divine, the desire to nurture, heal, and protect.

Like every living organism, we must adapt to survive, or else we face extinction. Human history began with primitive tribal communities struggling to meet their basic needs. Our strongest and most aggressive members became our leaders. Understandably, these dominating traits helped us survive and thrive in our early days. However, these same traits are now leading us to self-destruction. As a species, we must abandon violence and war, and refrain from exploiting each other and damaging our planet. These actions are not only harmful, but senseless.

It is time for humanity to mature. Time to stop acting in childish and destructive ways. We need to unite our peoples and our countries with the understanding that if your village cannot survive, then neither will mine.

Ooman Bean, Artists Statement

I believe we can all make a difference in our world, and even though it may be small, it pushes us toward improvement.

Being concerned for the health of our planet, and the welfare of our people worldwide, I feel compelled to act. I am not at all a perfect “anything”, certainly not the best at recycling, buying all organic, or reducing my carbon footprint, none of that – but I try. I have helped the homeless, worked with the disabled and volunteered in my community.

Creating art is my skill, and I can do something to help with that. So here is my prayer; that somehow by selling items that have this little message urging for evolution “Be better than human, be ooman” and by giving much of the profit from these sales to the organizations who are working hard to make a better world, that I will make a difference.

So, when you buy any product with the Ooman Bean image on it, a majority of the profit, (that means after the item cost, printing and shipping are paid for) goes to a selection of organizations that are currently receiving high marks for their missions and achievements.

I’m open to any input that is positive, productive, and helpful. I’m looking all the time for sustainable, ecologically improved, practical product partners, suggestions for charitable organizations, etc.

So, peace to you. May you do good for the brief time you visit this world.

Lovingly,

Lucy Brownlee

Lucy donates sixty percent of the gross net, before expenses, to six non-profit organizations every month. Those organizations change monthly. Inquiries for the names and amounts given are welcome.
